Featured Indicator: Sum of Patents Issued 2000-08 per Capita
This indicator shows the total number of patents issued between 2000 and 2008 per 1000 residents of the geography. Of the Northeast states, three states, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and New York were above the U.S. total of 2.784 patents per capita. In addition one Metro Statistical Area (MSA) was selected from each of the Northeast states. Three MSA’s, Albany-Schenectady-Troy, NY, Worcester, MA, and Manchester-Nashua, NH, were also above the U.S. total. Why this is significant Patents issued helps a region achieve an innovative high-tech economy. The types of jobs created in a high-tech economy are generally higher paying and lead to a more vibrant economic region.
